When Used in Reference to Dog Rescue, Do You Find the Term “Adoption” Offensive?

serveitindrag:

fullpelt:

Is there a term you would prefer to see used over “adoptable”, such as “homeless” or “rescue”?

It shouldn’t be offensive at all. “Adopt” means to “take in”, and is used in many instances (like “adopting” a dog, child, highway, or name/idea) and doesn’t usually refer to the thing/person/animal being taken in.

I can’t even think of another word with the same meaning as adopt.

I was having difficulty finding an alternative word for adoption that accurately describes the process, as well. Although I don’t believe it is fair to dictate what is and isn’t acceptable to take offense to, particularly in the case of triggering subjects; unless some genuine concern arises from the individuals that do find the term offensiveand I’ve yet to receive a complaint thus farI think we’ll continue to use the term, for sake of ease.

  1. my-sbblog answered: Not necessarily but If I were to rescue a dog I wouldn’t say I adopted it. I would say it’s my dog…
  2. lots-of-doggies answered: I’m not sure why this would be considered offensive. Not offensive to me at all.
  3. winter--s0lstice answered: Someone’s always going to be offended by something. I personally don’t see anything wrong with the term when referring to dog rescue.

  6. ursusunbearable answered: I don’t. It does bother me when people say ‘I adopted my dog from a breeder,’ because I feel like it confuses the issue.
